Whenever you connect your iPhone to your computer and sync it with iTunes, the phone’s contents are automatically backed up either to iCloud or to the computer. Backing up to the computer includes an option to encrypt the backup, which requires establishing a password. The result is that backup data is stored in an encrypted format that is unreadable unless you have the password to unlock it. If your computer is ever lost or stolen, your iPhone backups will be secured with a password. You won’t need to enter the password every time you sync your iPhone, but you must enter the password to access the backup data or restore an earlier backup. Writer Bio
